Factory shielding material, re-used for Turbo
This is the factory shielding material that comes off the exhaust manifold. It is a multilayer quilted alum/fiberglass material and is shapeable. You don't have to get it perfectly flat, cause it is going to have a curve in it when you're done!
CAUTION, this is a highly technical opperation,  ; ) !
I just flattened it out by stepping on it first, then lightly tapping it with a soft rubber hammer to shape it in place. You don't want to crush it too thin, as that will reduce it's insulating properties, ... be gentle.
When I removed the coolant bottle from the firewall, it left two holes open. I located the heat shield in the best location for the turbo and marked where the holes were in the firewall and drilled the shield for those holes. Then I attached it with the same bolts that came from the bottle I took off. There is already a lower heat shield under the car, held up with 4 plastic nuts. Take it down and form the new, (reused) heat shield to the tunnel with a soft rubber hammer. Again, DON"T smash it, .. just form it. Now put the lower heat shield back up, trapping the new one up against the floor. That's it! Now all the hoses and wires on the fire wall will be protected from the radiant energy of the turbo. Also during shut-down, the heat that rises up will not be gathering against the bare firewall, it will have a thermal barrier to help protect it.
This is a new addition to the "ever improving process". We have all seen how great the "brain trust", we call the internet can be, for sharing information.   ... Please! ... if you have any suggestions or comments, feel free to submit them. .... I am just one guy, trying to improve this great little car. I sure don't have all the answers. ... The more we work on this, the better it will become.
